James B. “Bernard” Fretwell, 98, of Bassett, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at his home.

He was born in Virginia on August 5, 1922 to the late Vince L. Fretwell and the late Olia Spencer Fretwell.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty C. Fretwell; brothers, Elmer, Hersel, Randolph and C.V. Fretwell; grandson, Jason Price.

Bernard served his country in United States Army during World War II.

Bernard is survived by his daughters, Delaine Gravley, Dewight Fretwell and Jeanine Shively; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and sister, Christine Hylton.

There will not be any visitation but you may come by the Bassett Funeral Service any time after 11:00 am on Monday, January 11, 2021.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Blackberry Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Kirk Montgomery.

 Due to the governor’s requirements for Covid-19, a face covering is required and social distancing is to be observed. [Funeral Home announcement]
