Lucy W. Gilmer, 89, formerly of Lebanon, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004.
Born on June 30, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Henry C. and Jessie Heritage Wood and the wife of the late James P. Gilmer.
Mrs. Gilmer was a graduate of Sullins College, Bristol Virginia, and King College, Bristol Tennessee. She returned to college in 1974 and earned a master's degree in guidance counseling from Radford University, Radford, Va. Mrs. Gilmer taught in public schools for 30 years and retired from education in 1979. She was an active member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church and the Pink Ladies at Russell County Medical Center. Mrs. Gilmer enjoyed camping and performing volunteer work.
Survivors include her son, James P. Gilmer Jr. and wife Norma, Morganton, N.C.; daughter, Joanne G. Barrett and husband Fred L., North East, Md.; sister, Jane W. Hyder, Bristol Tennessee, and grandchildren, James P. Gilmer III, Benjamin C. Gilmer, Jessica B. Koeningsberg and Matthew T. Barrett.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon, with the Rev. Mike Carter officiating.
