Obituary Online notes for Michael Donald RHOADES
Michael Rhoades, a former soccer coach at Shawnee Mission West with a lifelong passion for the sport, died December 28, 2019 at age 70 from health complications. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Luke Rhoades and survived by his mother, Della Marie Ellis Rhoades, his wife, Colleen Mannion and his three children; Adam Rhoades (Kim), Sarah Rhoades Gouttierre (Nestor), and Samantha Rhoades Still (Sean). He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Sophie, Wolfi and Morgan and his five siblings Dennis Rhoades (Star), Matt Rhoades, Lorre Rhoades Dysart (Jeffrey), Mina Rhoades Soccquet-Juglard (Jean) and Mary Jane Rhoades Kuehnet (Matt).
Michael served as an army medic during the Vietnam War. He went to Rockhurst College and UMKC. In 1976 he married Colleen Mannion. He grew up around soccer and enjoyed playing and watching the sport. He particularly enjoyed coaching soccer in the Kansas City area, including his children and a granddaughter. From 2012 through 2015 he coached the C teams for Shawnee Mission West boys and girls soccer. He also coached at Sporting Brookside and at Harmon High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Michael cared for all his players. In recent years, he loved watching his grandchildren play and went to every game he could.
"I always feel like that was sort of his true love, he loved us and his family, but he really loved soccer more than anything else," said Sarah Rhoades Gouttierre, his daughter, who is also asoocer coach. "He passed that love of soccer to his kids. It was something special that we shared growing up. That was a big part of our relationship with him, his guidance and support in our soccer careers."
Michael loved soccer, the outdoors, The Lake of the Ozark, fishing, The Grateful Dead, gardening, hot weather, his family and his grandchildren.
