Explored Kentucky, named Cumberland Gap and built lst cabin in KY in 1750 19 yrs. before Daniel Boone came to KY.

Born at Rye Field, Walker's Mother, Susannah (Peachy) Walker and husband Col. Thomas Walker died when Dr. Thomas Walker was young. He then lived with sis Mary Peachy (Walker) Gilmer and husband Dr. Gilmer at Gilmerton Plantation studying at Wm. & Mary College becoming a surgeon.

In 1741 at he married Mildred (Thornton) Meriwether widow of Nicholas Meriwether with 1 child. She was cousin to George Washington. Acquiring her 11,0000 acres he built the family home, Castle Hill.

While exploring he would ask his friend and neighbor at Shadwell, Peter Jefferson, to look after Castlehill and family. (Son John Walker and young Tom Jefferson were best friends.)

He served in Virginia House of Burgess 3 times and when Peter Jefferson died in 1757, he named Dr. Walker as guardian of his son future Pres. Thomas Jefferson.

Walker was Comissary General to the Virginia troops with George Washington in the French and Indian War.

Wife Mildred died after the birth of the 12th Walker child.

At age 66 he married Elizabeth Thorton by whom he had no issue.

As the state of Virginia was organized he became a member of the executive counsel. Known as a Peacemaker, he was the signer for several peace treaties with Indians in VA. & Ohio.

His last post was one of two delegates from Albemarle to the Virginia House of Delegates along with Thomas Jefferson.

He died at 79 yrs.
