Thomas de West of Swallowcliffe was the progenitor of the de West and West bloodline.

This family played an important role in the history of England and in Colonial America.

His descendants played founding roles in both Massachusetts Bay Colony and Virginia.

Thomas was most likely a knight in the service to this family.

Another fact that points to a relationship with the Pembroke family is that his son was granted the manor of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, by Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke.

His wife's name has not survived the ages.

He was the father of Sir Thomas de West II born 1251 and died 1344, who had married Alianore "Eleanor" De CANTELUPE the daughter of John Cantelupe and Margaret De Mohun.

Swallowcliffe is a village in Wiltshire, England. Its history dates back to 940 A.D., and the Saxon "Swealawanclif Charter." For over 200 years the village was part of the lands of the Earls of Pembroke.
