Janice Carol (Thomas) Walker
September 29, 1946 ~ December 7, 2024 (age 78)
Our precious caring and loving mother, Janice Carol Thomas Walker, 78 of Elon, gained her heavenly wings on Saturday, December 7th peacefully at home with family surrounding her, after 4 years of vascular dementia and several days of failing health.
Mom was born and raised here in Alamance County, on September 29, 1946, daughter of the late Eulas Vance Thomas Sr and Annie Perry Thomas.
Mom worked in the hosiery business for several years after graduating from Western Alamance High School in 1962, mom married James H. Bowman and was blessed with 2 daughters. Mom and dad divorced amicably and remarried Larry Walker, which had 2 bonus daughters. Mom then worked for Carolina Biological in the Order Entry/Customer Service Department. At 53, mom decided on a career change to be able to help people more than she already had as it was her gift and passion. Enrolling at Alamance Community College she completed her studies and was in the top 3 of her class. Mom became a Certified Nursing Assistant and was immediately hired by Ralph L Scott Life Services several years later she chose what was then known as Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance County now known as AuthoraCare Collective. Mom was a devoted employee no matter where she worked or served, always showing so much care and compassion to her patients, their families there at the Hospice Home on Alamance Road, then retired after 16 years. Shortly before she retired Mom worked for Rich and Thompson Funeral Services part time for a few years as my stepdad started having some health issues, so she lovingly became his nurse. Many, many friends were made along with some great co-workers during her time with these companies. Many are still so special and dear to our hearts and family. Mom was an avid reader, loved animals, as all were spoiled rotten up until her last beloved dog, Muffie. (Mom even rescued stray cats from the neighborhood by crawling under houses and raising them until another good home could be found). Mom had a beautiful alto voice and sang in choir and was part of the communion team at her church, City Lake Baptist. Mom also was a strong witness for God and led several to Christ. She enjoyed flowers and plants and oh boy did she have a green thumb like her momma and always loved a good Hallmark movie.
As subtle changes in moms every day life occurred, she experienced a bad fall and was diagnosed with vascular dementia and need daily assistance. As a family we decide we would laugh instead of cry as mom had a cute sense of humor. As her disease progressed, her speech and thoughts we troubled, so we decided to speak “Rabbit” when she was having a difficult time. Many laughs were shared along with a few tears. Mom often spoke of “Home” aka Heaven early on. As the last days approached and she was ready to transition, she said she wasn’t ready which surprised us. Then a few days before she passed, mom said Jesus was at the end of her bed and she told him she was not ready, I don’t know how to go, I need a ride. A day or so later mom gentle took in a deep breath, and it was her last, she was on her way to her new home in heaven and we can only imagine that reunion celebration the occurred.
