Herley Gattis Cates
Greensboro – Herley Gattis Cates, 94, passed away on January 3, 2021 at Wesley Long Hospital. There will be a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m., at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. The Family will receive friends at a 2:00 p.m. Visitation preceding the service.
He was born on January 13, 1926 to the late D.D. and Catherine Cates in the Pleasant Grove Community in Alamance County.
As a young man, he served his country as a gunner in the 467th Bombardment Group of the US Army Air Corp during World War II. Once honorably discharged, he completed his education at Burlington Business College. He was a charter member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, where he served for many years as an usher and deacon. Before retirement, Herley was the longtime owner and manager of Motor Supply Company, Inc. in Greensboro and served as president of the North Carolina-Virginia Automotive Wholesalers Association.
Before moving to Greensboro in 1963, Herley was Sales Manager of Norton Russ Automotive in Burlington, NC and a member of Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church where he enjoyed many years of service as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 22.
His lifelong involvement in various fraternal organizations included the Oasis Oriental Shrine, the Gate City Masonic Lodge where he was a 32nd degree Mason, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Guilford Chapter 141 of the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Patron and many years as Chaplain of the Chapter.
As an instrument rated, private pilot, Herley loved taking to the skies to fly his Cessna 172. He enjoyed flying well into his late 80s.
Herley is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Peggy Tickle Cates; daughters, Cheryl Armstrong (Robert), Donna Wellington (Donald), and Annette Tilley (Michael); grandchildren, Chris Clark, Meredith McCarthy, Matthew Northam, Jennifer Sides, and Michael Tilley, Jr. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents, D.D. and Catherine Cates.
The Family will honor Herley with a private burial. A Memorial Service for friends and loved ones will be announced later.
