Virginia Beach - Lynn Dewey Kernodle, III, "Butch", 71, passed away Monday,
January 6, 2014 suddenly at home.
He was the son of L.D. "Doodle" Kernodle, Jr. and Hazel Hensley Kernodle.
Butch will be remembered for "Starting with nothing and still having most of it." He played and coached softball for a number of years and enjoyed jet skiing on the Elizabeth River with family and friends. He spent many years following a true passion for drag racing. Of his many accomplishments in 40 years of his drag racing career, one of his proudest moments was winning the IHRA Fall Nationals at Bristol International Dragway in 1993.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Joyce Kernodle; Butch and
Joyce were high school sweethearts and recently celebrated their 50 year wedding anniversary.
He was also survived by his daughters, Terry Haynes, Kelly Rutherford, and Nicki Kopassis; grandsons, Jackson Haynes and Emmanuel Kopassis; brother, Harry Kernodle; sister, Lynnette Niedentohl; as well as many close
friends and family, (you know who you are.)
