Obituary Online notes for Ann Cole KERNODLE
Ann was born on October 7, 1946, in Durham.
She graduated from Williams High School in Burlington, and went on to attend Duke University. There she earned a BA in Psychology in 1967 after completing an accelerated course curriculum and time abroad at the University of Strasburg, France.
Ann's delight in travel led to employment as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines from 1967 - 1968. In the spring of 1969, she began graduate studies at Rider College and UNCG during which time she began to fully realize her desire and her calling to reach out to those in need. Thus began a lifetime commitment to helping others and to sharing her love and her heart.
After marrying in 1968, Ann had two children. She worked full-time in the home to raise them until 1984 when she began her quest to enrich the lives of older adults within our community.
She earned her Certificate of Gerontology from Livingstone College in 1985.
Ann believed strongly in her community and its opportunities and in the joys to be shared intergenerationally. As a result, she devoted her life, both professionally and personally, to advocating for older adults and their families. She served as the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Director and as the Community Services Division Director of United Services for Older Adults in Greensboro from 1984 -1991. She then went on to become the Aging Program Specialist at the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments, Area Agency on Aging. In 1994, Ann returned to direct service as the Executive Director of the Adult Center for Enrichment. Her work through this agency and through the Shepherd's Center of Greensboro has been Ann's life and joy over the past years.
Ann's community activities, professional endeavors, and awards and honors are numerous and diverse. She volunteered for Mobile Meals, the Greensboro Literacy Task Force and Greensboro Urban Ministry. She was an active member of ALTRUSA of Greensboro and a former board member of Share-A-Home of Guilford, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro. She also served as the Chair for the Board of Advisors for Friends Homes, Inc. In 1991, she was awarded the Woman of Achievement Award in Government by the Greensboro Commission on the Status of Women. 470, Ann Cole Kernodle Umstead
