Obituary Online notes for Janie Brooks SANDS
WINSTON-SALEM— Mrs. Janie Sands Smith, 97, formerly of Reidsville, died Thursday morning, Sept. 30, 2004, at her home in the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, following a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Woodmont United Methodist Church in Reidsville. Family and friends will be received afterwards at Pennrose Country Club in Reidsville.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Reidsville, where she was an active supporter of music development in Rockingham County.
Mrs. Smith taught piano to three generations of students, both privately and in the public school system, and several of her students established careers in music. She played the organ at various churches, including First Baptist Church of Reidsville. Mrs. Smith was also an early supporter of Rockingham Community College, establishing the "Alexander Powell Sand Scholarship" in memory of her father in December, 1987.
She was a 1924 graduate of Reidsville High School and a 1928 graduate of Greensboro College with a degree in music.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Woodmont United Methodist Church of Reidsville, and later, of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of the late Alexander Powell Sands and Ruby Jones Sands, both of Reidsville and a sister of the late Alexander Paul Sands.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas Alexander Smith and his wife, Sandra Ransier Smith, both of Reidsville; two grandchildren, Karen Smith Norton of Los Angeles, Calif., and her husband, Robert Ed Norton and Alexander "Sander" Sands Smith and wife Linda Sink Smith of Winston-Salem; two great- grandchildren, Alexander Gentle Smith and Thomas Graham Smith; two nephews, Senator A. P. Sands III, and the late James Lawrence Sands of Reidsville and their families.
