She attended Weldon Public Schools and then attended Business School at High Point College, now
High Point University. After school, she worked in the Engineering Department of Halifax Paper Company in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She was married in June 1949 to Joseph Daniel Franks, Jr., then a student in the Law School of The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. They lived there until Joe finished school and passed the NC Bar Exam, after which they moved to Greensboro. Joe opened a law office and practiced law in Greensboro for fifty years. Ginny worked briefly at Jones Automotive Company and then accepted a position at Wimbish Insurance Agency. She remained at Wimbish until 2001 when the Agency was sold to First Citizens Insurance Services. She continued to work until her retirement in 2004. In early 2005 she sold her home in Greensboro and moved to Whitestone, a Masonic and Eastern Star Community on Holden Road where she lived until her death. She loved her years at the Masonic Home and was president of the Resident’s Council and was recently selected as Resident of the Month for September.
During her years in the insurance business, she was appointed to six terms on the Guilford City/County Insurance Advisory Committee where she served two terms following her retirement. She was the first woman on that committee. She was appointed by St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company to serve on their Agents’ Communiqué Panel and was the first woman to serve on this panel. For many years she was active in the Greensboro Association of Insurance Women and the North Carolina Association of Insurance Women and held offices in both.
Ginny loved her family, watching sports (especially the Tar Heels) and her dogs. She loved the opera, playing bridge and going to the beach with her closet friends. She always saw the “glass half full” and rarely complained about anything. Ginny was a terrific Mom and her two boys were the apples of her eye. Even with her health declining, she loved reminiscing with old pictures and talking on Face Time with her son and family in Florida. Her most endearing trait was a fierce loyalty to family and friends.
Ginny is survived by her son, Joseph D. Franks, III and wife Tiffany of Danville, Virginia, son, Charles Tilghman Franks of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, his wife Beth, and son Chase as well as three nephews, Andrew C.
