Obituary Online notes for John Joseph HERMAN
Senior Chief John Herman, 75, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Oct. 7, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born August 12, 1936 in Camden, New Jersey and was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Herman. John retired from the U.S. Navy after 32 years of service as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and Navy Diver. During his extensive military career he served aboard the USS Amphion, USS Bearss, USS Fox and the USS Preserver. While aboard the USS Preserver he participated in salvage and recovery of the Air Florida Flight 90 crash in Washington, DC and the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in Florida. He was the recipient of many naval awards and medals. Upon leaving the Navy, John was employed with Colonna shipyard for the next twenty-two years. He had a passion for gardening and loved his Koi ponds.
He was also a devoted grandfather who loved teaching and participating in his grandchildren's activities especially baseball where he was a permanent fixture behind home plate.
Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Jannie Herman; six children and stepchildren, Kevin (Suzanne) of Williamsburg, VA, Joey of Florida, Tracy of Norfolk, VA, Marian Jarmon (Bobby) of Florida, Lisa Brown (Stanley) of Tennessee, Kim Maunz (Robert) of Chesapeake, VA; and seven grandchildren, Amanda (Cory), Ashley, Jared, Justin, Dustin, Austin and Jordan; a brother, Robert (Robin), a sister, Peggy Burke (Danny), both of New Jersey; and his beloved pets, Cooper and Cody. He will be deeply missed by all.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
