Nell Somers Coley
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Nell Somers Coley, 82, of 1880 Brookwood Ave., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell.
Nell was born on April 16, 1932, to the late Lester Somers and Annie Ross Somers of Lee County. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Bill Somers, the Rev. Lester Somers, Mabel Somers Peeler and Frances Somers Beckom.
Nell was an adoring daughter, sister, wife, mother, and MawMaw. She is survived by her children, Cindy Coley Pruette (John) of Elon, Donna Coley Jones (Keith) of Elon, and Douglas Ross Coley (Nancy) of Greensboro. She also had three grandchildren, Ross Coley (Brooke) of Greensboro, Sarah Kathryn Coley of Greensboro and Will Thomas Jones (Sarah Grace) of Holly Springs.
Nell was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend of 62 years, Herman Thomas Coley Jr.
Nell was a stay-at-home Mom while living in Burlington. Herman and Nell lived in New Jersey for seven years where she worked for AM Best Company. She had many remarkable gifts but two that stood out above the rest were her love for her family and her perseverance. With her family’s help, Nell weathered many health issues throughout her life and conquered each of them with strength and resilience. Nell loved to spend time at the lake resting in the sun and fishing, but only when Herman was there to bait her hook. She loved making baskets, quilting and hooked rugs.
Nell was a member of St. Mark’s Church of Burlington and the Christian Workers Sunday School class. Her friends and family will lovingly remember her determination, courage, grace, and quick wit. Over the last 18 months, Nell shared a very special friendship with Faye Torrain. The family is thankful for Faye’s support and care of Nell.
Nell’s family greatly acknowledges the generosity of the staff of the Village of Brookwood and the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 at St. Mark’s Church in Burlington with the Rev. Ben Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mark’s cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

BURLINGTON — Mr. Herman Thomas Coley Jr., 85, of 1880 Brookwood Ave., Burlington, N.C., passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell following a brief illness.
Herman was born Sept. 30, 1927 to the late Herman Thomas Coley and Alta Glenn Coley. A native of Alamance County, Herman was a loving husband for 62 years to Nell Somers Coley of the home.
Herman was an adoring son, husband, father, Pawpaw and brother.
Herman is survived by his wife, Nell Coley; children, Cindy Coley Pruette (John) of Elon, Donna Coley Jones (Keith) of Elon, and Douglas Ross Coley (Nancy) of Greensboro, N.C.; and brother, Bill Glenn Coley (Martie) of Kure Beach, N.C. He also had three grandchildren who were his joy, Ross Coley (Brooke) of Greensboro, Sarah Kathryn Coley of Greensboro and Will Thomas Jones of Cary.
Herman had many remarkable gifts but two that stood out above the rest were his passion for his family and his love for helping others.
Woodworking, fixing things and spending time with his family at the lake were some of his favorite things. Herman retired as an engineer from Western Electric, Bell Labs and Lucent with over 35 years of faithful service. He spent many hours after retirement as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity building houses. He also mowed and prepared church baseball fi elds for games and repaired sewing machines to be sold at the Hospice fl ea market. Herman was always willing to help with whatever needed to be done. He left a legacy of helping anyone who crossed his path.
Herman was a member of St. Mark’s Church in Burlington and the Christian Workers Sunday School class. He also served as a deacon and elder of the Consistory. Herman’s friends and family will lovingly remember his kindness, willpower, courage and faithfulness.
