James Henry Tate Jr.
BURLINGTON — James Henry Tate Jr., 64, of 2828 Blanche Drive, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center.
He was born in Rockingham County to the late James Henry Tate Sr. and Daisy Leo Simmons Tate and was married to Phyllis Elaine Gee Tate, girl across the street in the Cameron Street of his boyhood, the great love of his life, for 41 years.
From 1967-71, he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, with years of devoted service in various leadership roles centered on the youth of the church.
He was the owner of Tate Advertising Design. He was an accomplished artist, astronomy enthusiast, gourmet cook, and an admirer of Andy Kauffman and old-time comedy acts, such as Abbott and Costello and The Three Stooges.
He loved basketball and played in two organized leagues, practicing twice a week (Mondays with a senior league team and Thursdays with a church league team of men mostly half his age). It was during a pick-up game that he collapsed, no doubt dreaming of making that perfect shot.
In addition to his adoring wife, Mr. Tate is survived by two children who inherited his strong will and determination, Erik James Tate, of Burlington, and Cynthia Elaine Tate, of Boone; as well as siblings, Jay Gilliam, of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Marie Gibson, of Reidsville, Jackie Sharpe, of Graham, Shirley Lewis, of Burlington, Alice Stuckey, of Hopedale, Mattie Terrell, of Elon, and Dollie Everette of Marietta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
A public viewing will be held Monday, July 28 from 2 to 6 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home in Graham.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 712 S. Williamson Ave., Elon. Friends and family will be invited to gather in the fellowship hall of the church following the service.
He will be buried with military honors at Stony Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.
A memorial Web site has been created at
www.tatefamilymemories.blogspot.com where friends and family are invited to share their memories.
McClure Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
