Mr. Ray Stroud, age 80, of Woodland Blvd., Wilkesboro died Friday, June 27, 2003 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 11:00 at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Alfred E. Andrews, Jr. officiating. The family will receive at Wilkesboro Baptist Church Fellowship Hall following the service.
Mr. Stroud was born in Wilkes County, June 5, 1923, to William Alonzo and Ethel Pearl Gilliam Stroud.
He was an active member and Deacon Emeritus of Wilkesboro Baptist Church, where he served on three building committees, including the expansion completed last year.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, when he flew 239 combat missions in the Burma- China region.
Mr. Stroud was formerly president of Wilkes Savings and Loan and had numerous civic interests. He previously served two terms as a Wilkesboro town commissioner and was past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wilkes Community College.
As a member of the Yadkin River Greenway Committee he was instrumental in getting the first two phases completed and was actively working on the third phase at the time of his death. For a number of years he has been treasurer of the Wilkesboro Firemen's Relief Fund and was serving his second term on the Wilkesboro ABC Board. For more than 25 years he served on the board of directors of Old Wilkes Jail, Inc. He was past president of the North Wilkesboro Kiwanis Club, and a charter member of the Wilkesboro Business and Professional Men's Club. Mr. Stroud was a Mason for over fifty years, a member of Liberty Lodge #45, and a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite.
