Obituary Online notes for “Frankie” Helen Frances COLLEY
Helen Francis "Frankie" Colley Gilliam, 81, died at 7 p.m. May 28, 2006, at the Penn Nursing Center in Reidsville.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Reidlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. David Huggins officiating.
Frankie was born on Aug. 1, 1924, the daughter of the late Joshua C. and Helen Hogue Colley. She taught office practice and office occupations in the public schools for many years, with assignments at Ruffin High School, Western Alamance High School and Reidsville Senior High School, from which retired in 1986. She attended Queens College and graduated from High Point College.
As an eighth grader in Stokes County, she won the first North Carolina Spelling Bee in 1938, going on to finish eighth in the national event in Washington, D.C. As one of the state winners, she got to meet then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During World War II, she did clerical work as a civilian in the Pentagon and often recalled seeing movie stars such as Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart, who were in the military.
Frankie is remembered for her prize-winning talent in jingle-writing contests during the 1950's and early 1960's. Major prizes she won included three boats, among other merchandise. She also was a published author, whose poetry and fiction won awards in the Rockingham County Fine Arts Festival. Some of her poems were included in the book, "Womankind."
A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her daughter, Marceille Gilliam of Reidsville; son Andy Gilliam of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Judy Gilliam of Reidsville; grandson Chris Gilliam of Broomfield, Col.; and brother Robert H.
