Dewey Garland Braxton
July 16, 1947 ~ June 23, 2025 (age 77)
Dewey Braxton of Gibsonville, and formerly Graham, passed away Monday, June 23, 2025 after three months of failing health. Born July 16, 1947, in Alamance County, North Carolina, Dewey grew up near Saxapahaw and was Valedictorian of his eighth-grade class. He was a leader in the Explorer Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Southern Alamance High School in 1964 and later attended NC State University before enlisting in the US Air Force where he served four years and achieved the rank of Sergeant, Flight Simulator Specialist.
He worked as a Department Manager for K-Mart in Chicago among other locations before returning home to NC. He then spent 19 years in Contract Sales at Newlin Hardware in Burlington, NC until its closure in 2004. He also worked for Jay Smith & Associates in Snow Camp until retiring in 2010.
Dewey was a faithful, loyal friend and helper to many. He was an avid genealogist and spent countless hours researching family history. He self-published several books on his paternal and maternal family lines and was also an awarded poet and a copyrighted songwriter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius (C.E.) and Rachel Thompson Braxton, and by a sister, Martha (David) Pearsall. He is survived by two brothers, Robert (Beth) of Fairfax, VA, and Elmer (Linda) of Gibsonville; four sisters, Bonita (Jay) Smith of Snow Camp, Sheila (John) Greeson of Haw River, Hope (Alan) Turney of Albuquerque, NM, and Sherrie (Richard) Elkins of Graham. He leaves behind an extended family.
Dewey was predeceased by two of his four former wives, Jacalyn Kennedy Davidson and Elizabeth Graves Cox.
Dewey is also survived by his very special niece and caregiver, Shelly Braxton and her family of Bloomington-Normal, IL and his best friend and “daughter,” Jason Mansfield of Mebane, NC.
Rich and Thompson in Graham will hold a visitation on Sunday, June 29th at 3:00 until 5:00 PM. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 30th at 11:00 at Moore’s Chapel Baptist Church in Saxapahaw. The burial will follow in the Moore’s Chapel Cemetery. Afterward a funeral reception will be held at the Moore’s Chapel fellowship hall, estimated time is 12:45 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Moore’s Chapel Cemetery Association in care of Ashley Mann, 220 Dakota Dr. Graham, NC 27253.
