YN3, US Navy, World War II.
Dorothy Mae Thomas Sims (1917-1984) was a native of Surry County, NC.
In spring 1936, she completed a 2-year business course at Flora MacDonald college, according to her marriage announcement.
(Flora MacDonald was in Red Springs, Robeson County, NC, and was a Presbyterian women's college.)
She married Hugh Sims in 1937.
In the 1940 census, they lived in Charlotte. Hugh was a clerical worker and Dorothy was a secretary at a bottling company.
Interestingly, as a married woman, she joined the WAVES in 1944 (see attached article).
In the 1950 census, they had no children and still lived in Charlotte. Hugh was a salesman and she had no occupation.
In August 1970, they divorced.
Hugh died three months later of "advanced nutritional cirrhosis of liver."
Dorothy lived another 14 years and died at Carol Woods Health Center in Chapel Hill.
No children are mentioned in her obituary (attached). 470, SN Dorothy Mae Thomas Sims
