John Van Cleave was a math professor at Jacksonville State University for 26 years. He was a graduate of Wadley High School, JSU, and earned his Master's and Doctorate from Auburn. He was active in many church and civic groups. He was awarded a Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.
At the time of his death he was associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Anniston, co-pastor at Glen Addie Mission Church in Anniston, and had just been appointed to pastor at Goshen UMC.
