Martha was born in Huntington County, to the late Laurance Smith and the late Ruth (Cramer) Smith. She married Thurl D. Howell on Nov. 10, 1946. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1996.
Martha was a graduate of Jefferson Township High School. She attended Ball State University for six months and Grant School of Practical Nursing for one year. She then attended Marion College and became a registered nurse. Martha retired from the Wabash County Hospital. She was a member of the LaFontaine United Methodist Church and the Homemakers of Wabash County.
She is survived by a daughter, Trujeanna Downam, Montgomery, AL; sons, Laurance (Cathy) Howell, Charlotte, NC, and John Howell, LaFontaine; sisters, Joyce Wehr, Markle, and Alice Blinn, Wells County; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. 470, Martha Jean Smith Howell
