February 21, 1931 - February 2, 2016 Barbara J. Updike, 84, of Anderson, passed away February 2, 2016 at the Monticello House. She was born February 21, 1931, in Winchester, the daughter of the late Harrison and Merle (Roush) McLaughlin. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1949 and later graduated from Olivet Nazarene College
Barbara lived in many places throughout her adult life: Marion, IN; Bourbonnais, IL; San Jose, CA; Cupertino, CA; Mesa, AZ. Since 1995, she lived in Anderson. She belonged to the Madison County Garden Club, the Madison County Extension Club and the Grace Bible Fellowship. She taught Sunday school, worked with youth groups, helped the Homemakers Club, sang and played the piano at church and nursing homes, and cared for several elderly people. She had a special place in her heart for dogs, children, friends and, most especially, her family.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Robert Banning, Max (Linda) Banning, Doug (Andrea) Banning, Richard (Jenny) Banning, Connie (Jim) Petersen, Judy (Roy) Carpenter, Kimm (Dan) Porter, Rev. Kelly (Lyn) Carpenter, Kris, (Mary) Carpenter, Kathleen Pharris, Eileen McLaughlin, Colleen (Karen) McLaughlin; Maureen (John) Dayton, Michael McLaughlin, Matthew McLaughlin, many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul Updike; niece, Karen Harrison; brothers, Willard, Robert, and William McLaughlin; sisters, Mary Jane Carpenter and Dorothy Banning.
Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home, with Brother Patrick Eaks officiating. Burial will follow at Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester. 470, Barbara J. McLaughlin Updike
