James (Jim) E. Pontius, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 12, 2018, at St. Vincent Hospital, Kokomo.

Jim was born on August 6, 1937 in Tipton, Indiana to Burgess “Bud” and Maxine (Clark) Pontius. He graduated from Peru High School in 1956. Jim married Roberta (Temple) Pontius on June 11, 1961.

Jim was in the National Guard for eight years. He was a fifty-six-year member of the First Baptist Church in Peru. He was a life member of the Peru Maennerchor. Jim worked at Bazley Meats, Scott’s IGA, Brechbiel Grocery and then retired from the Indiana State Highway.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of fifty-six years, Roberta, is a son, Jeff Pontius (Gina Hawley) of Peru and a daughter, Joan Clark-Herder (Steve) of Kokomo, grandchildren Tristin Pontius, Logansport, Kyle Clark, Ryan Clark, Bethany Herder, Courtney Herder, Kokomo, Aaron Herder (Cheyenne), Caitlin Herder, South Bend, Alexander Herder, Kentucky, great-granddaughter Naomi Wren Herder, South Bend, brother John Robert Pontius (Alice), Fort Wayne, sister Mary Jane Decker (Earl), New Haven and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Robert and Ruby Temple, sisters Collette Nelson, Jeanne Ewing, Carol Sue Halley, brother Bill Pontius, and son-in-law Gregg Clark.

Calling will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 11:00AM — 1:00PM with service to follow at First Baptist Church, 53 E Main St, Peru, Indiana with Pastor Robert Adelsperger officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Indiana with military service provided by the Miami County Military Rites Team.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Benevolence fund or the Arthritis Foundation.
