Houston Powell Sharpe Sr.
GRAHAM — Born May 20, 1917 near Madison, in Rockingham County, N.C. Graduated from Madison High School—1935 and attended college in High Point. Served in Madison National Guard and served in U.S. Army during World War II. After discharge from the Army served with the U.S. Merchant Marines. Established Sharpe Hosiery Mills Inc. in 1949 and also owned and operated several textile mills and retail stores, where he bought apparel for mail order companies.
Survived by sons, Houston P. Sharpe Jr. and John S. Sharpe ; daughter, Elizabeth Sharpe Wilson; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Predeceased by wife, Cora Harden Stratford; father, John B. Sharpe and mother, Nannie Powell Sharpe .
Was a charter member of the Alamance Country Club and a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter. Served 10 years on the Burlington/Graham ABC Board and four years on the Graham Council.
There will be graveside rites Saturday, August 20, 2005 at noon at the Graham Memorial Park, Graham, N.C. The family will receive friends at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham on Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time.
