Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2016.

Elizabeth Griffinger Shelby Raised her family in Short Hills, proud owner of Carriage House Monograms Elizabeth "Betty" Shelby of Maplewood, N.J., went to her eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, with complications from pneumonia at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, N.J.

There will be a small interment service at Christ Church in Short Hills, N.J., for family members later this month.

A longtime resident of Short Hills, Betty was the beloved wife of Albert Rohrer Shelby who predeceased her in 2011. They were married for 61 years.

Born in Orange, N.J. on Dec. 18, 1926, she was the daughter of Harry Griffinger and Madeline Armstrong Griffinger and grew up in South Orange, N.J.

She attended Columbia High School and then Smith College, Class of 1948. A proud alumna, she lived in Talbot House at Smith and always reminisced how wonderful those four years were for her.

On a blind date in 1947, she met her future soul mate, her Albert. They were married in 1950 and settled in Short Hills soon after.

There began the busy years of raising four children and getting them through school and off to college. Betty was a good, steady tennis and paddle tennis player and a regular on the courts of the Short Hills Club and the Bay Head Yacht Club. She adored the beach at the New Jersey shore and the family summers in Bay Head were a joy and a source of many great memories.

In 1980, Betty decided to enter the business world and founded Carriage House Monograms. On a large, computerized sewing machine, she monogrammed men's dress shirts, bathrobes, tennis racquet covers, women's blouses, and countless other items that her customers wanted initialed. It was a very successful endeavor and she was very proud of the quality of her product and the loyalty of her clientele.

In 2006, with their move to Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, the business was sold.

Betty is survived by her three sons and their children: Bryan Shelby of New York City, Jonathan Shelby and his wife, Suzanne, of Madison, N.J., Evan Shelby and his wife, Susan, of Hamilton, Mass., and seven grandchildren.

Her daughter, Sarah Armstrong Shelby, predeceased her in 1989. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to your favorite charity.
