Olva Raymond Odum, Sr. was known as "Hip" to his family and friends, short for "Hippopotamus," because he was pudgy.
He was the baby of the family, and the 7th child of Jeremiah and Etta Ora Griffith Odum.
He met his future wife, Hazel Fern Gray, while both were working at the Commonwealth in Granite City.
He was in WWI, was a Boy Scout Leader, and on the draft board for WWII.
Hazel and Hip had 5 children, one of whom died at 16 mos. of scarlet fever.

Hazel Fern Gray Odum was born of John Amos Gray, Sr. and Mary A. Coffee.
In the early 1900's, her family ran a boarding house in Venice, IL and fed many of the workers from the steelmill at lunch and dinner.
She met her future husband while a waitress at the Commonwealth Plant in Granite City. Hazel married Olva Raymond Odum and bore five children, one of whom died at 16 mos. from scarlet fever.
She was a member of the Illinois Red Cross, and a President of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion.
She played cards for over 50 years with the same group of "girls." She could cut and sew clothes without a pattern, and cook without a recipe.
She was a teetotaller and never allowed alcohol or tobacco in her house. [57969]
