OBITUARIES Dr. Woodrow Wilson Walker Sr.
CHARLOTTE — Dr. Woodrow Wilson Walker Sr., 80, died August 15 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
He was a native of Gibsonville, N.C. He was the son of the late Dr. John Barrett Walker Sr. and Maggie Ruth Varner Walker . A retired orthodontist, Dr. Walker practiced general dentistry in Burlington, then orthodontics in Charlotte and Gastonia for 30 years. He was the first orthodontist in Gastonia. Dr. Walker received his dental degree from Indiana University in 1947 and received his Masters in Orthodontia from UNC Chapel Hill in 1955. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. Dr. Walker was well known for his botany hobby and his invention of "Dr. Walker’s Little Green Worm" used by many fishermen.
Survivors include his four sons, Woodrow Wilson Walker Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Sparta, N.C., Dr. Robert Edwin Walker of Charlotte, James Stephen Walker of Charlotte, Samuel Floyd Walker and wife, Tara, of Sparta; daughter, Karen Scott LaBerdia and husband, Jeffrey, of Concord; sister, Agnes Boggus of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, Kenton LaBerdia, Scott Walker and Marissa Walker ; and former wife, Ora Scott Brady.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Walker Orr; and a brother, Dr. John Barrett Walker Jr.
Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 18 at Founders Chapel, McLean Funeral Directors, Gastonia. Family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the service. Chaplain John Stanley will officiate.
