Obituary Online notes for David Derwood MATTHEWS
BURLINGTON - Mr. D.D. "Dud" Matthews, 97, formerly of South Mebane Street, Burlington, died at Bermuda Terrace in Advance on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at 11:06 p.m., after several years of failing health.
A native of Harnett County, he was the husband of the late Zadie Lindsay Matthews and the son of William Bailey Matthews and Mattie Carpenter Matthews, both deceased.
He was a former police chief of Burlington, a former mayor pro-tem and a retired salesman at Belk Department Store.
He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. He was a charter, and now life, member of the Burlington Moose Lodge.
Survivors include a son, Mr. J. David Matthews and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Mr. Michael D. Matthews and wife Jamie of Greensboro and Mrs. Kathleen M. Barnes and husband Chris of Winston-Salem; and four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Christopher, Abigail and Max.
The funeral will be conducted at at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Rich & Thompson Chapel, in Burlington by the Rev. Neal Salter.
