W. Howard Troxler
    ELON — W. Howard Troxler, 83, of 2947 Old 87 Hwy., died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at his residence after several months of declining health. He was born September 5, 1920 in Alamance County. He was the husband for 50 years to the late Mary Simpson Troxler; and son to the late R.B. and Daisy Troxler.
    Mr. Troxler served as Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army 377 th Transportation Corps Service Company, Harbor Craft in World War II, where he was awarded the American Theater Service Medal and the WW II Victory Medal. A lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, he was active in all areas of the church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Pastor-Parish Committee, Finance Committee, Boy Scout Leader, Choir Member and Sunday school teacher. Through Shiloh Church he established the W. Howard Troxler Scholarship Fund for continued education of Shiloh Community youth.
    In 1954 Mr. Troxler founded Piedmont Metals and was a charter member and past president of the National Ornamental Metal Manufacturers Organization. He was also past president of Club 30 Ballroom Dance Club and was an avid dancer and gardener. He was originally employed at the Newport News, Virginia Shipyard and Carolina Steel in Greensboro.
    Survivors include a daughter, Havoline T. Gilliam and her husband, J. Wesley, of Elon; sons, Rockie D. Troxler and his wife, Mary Lou, of Elon, Mark W. Troxler and his wife, Suzanne, of Burlington; sisters, Lona Mae Wicker (Slocum), Elizabeth Wade (Arthur), Irene Howerton and her husband, Garland, Lora Lea Wade and her husband, Pete, all of Gibsonville; grandchildren, C. Ray Gilliam and his wife, Tracy, Sean W. Gilliam, Chad T. Gilliam, Tonja M. Troxler, Jeremy D. Troxler and his wife, Nicole, Jesse W. Troxler and his wife, Jaime, William M. Troxler, and Heidi L. Troxler; great-grandchildren, Carmen Gilliam, Lindsay Gilliam, Madeline Gilliam, Noah Troxler; and over 100 nieces and nephews.
    Mr. Troxler came from a large family of 16 brothers and sisters, Thomas Troxler and his wife, Flara, Ira L. Troxler and his wife, Lamer, BC David Troxler and his wife, Virgie, J. Wilbert Troxler and his wife, Vitus, Robert L. Troxler and his wife, Mildred, L. Paul Troxler and his wife, Dawn, J. Edward Troxler and his wife, Effie, Willie Troxler, Alice Lewis and her husband, K.B., Kate McMillan and her husband, Charles, and Estelle Troxler.
    The graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Dawson.
    The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., also in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service, and at other times at the home.
    Memorials may be made to the W. Howard Troxler Scholarship Fund, c/o Emery K. Gilliam, 4219 N.C. 87 North, Elon, N.C. 27244.
