MEBANE — Janet “Mam-Mam” Crisp Soares (Jah-net), 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of April 19, 2016, after struggling for several months with declining health and complications from a recent fall.
Born Aug. 29, 1936, in Gastonia, NC, to John Howard and Olivia Rabb-Crisp, Janet was the youngest of four girls.
She was preceded in death by her infant sister, Gwendolyn; mother, Olivia; sister, Lavon Whitesell; and her father, Howard.
Her only living sibling is Carolyn Gaylor of St. Petersburg Florida.
She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Gilbert Anthony Soares Jr., affectionately known as “Poppies;” daughter, Diana Dollar and her children, Briana and Brandon Andrews of Mebane; daughter, Patti Dollar Allred and husband Bryon, their children Tyler and her son Krastyn, Kyle and financee’ Emily Allen and Brent Allred of Mebane; daughter, Teresa Dearr and husband Randy and their children, Charles, James, Annamarie, Isabella and Jacob Dearr of Bahama, Greyson and wife Sarah and their children Bekah and Cole of Durham; son, Tim Soares and wife Cara and their children Luke and Sydney of Gibsonville; daughter Tiffany and husband James Kearney of Hillsborough; daughter, Tina and husband Michael Tetreault and their son Nate of Raleigh.
In the 1940’s her family moved to Burlington, NC, seeking work and strong Christian fellowship. They settled in the small mill hill village of Glen Hope. Glen Hope Baptist Church was within walking distance, was where she began her lifelong membership, and where she was a member of Mildred Overman’s class with those crazy beach trip women for many years. Then she and Gil were members of The Guiding Light Sunday School class for the past 27 years and also attended Lamb’s Chapel.
She was involved in several ministries, particularly the Bereavement and the Shut-In’s Committee, until her health no longer allowed.
Janet was affectionately known as Mam-Mam to those who knew and loved her. She liked to spend her time admiring her flowers, watching her hummingbirds feed and watching Poppies work on his VW’s.
One of Mam-Mam’s greatest treasures was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed visiting the North Carolina beaches, lighthouses, long walks and shell collecting. She also loved the beautiful waterfalls, river rocks and the original Mast General Store in the North Carolina Mountains.
Mam-Mam was an amazing cook with one rule. No paper plates! Fine southern food must be served on her vintage Franciscan Desert Rose china. She welcomed everyone into her home and always invited them to her table, ONLY after they washed their hands WITH SOAP!
She had a heart for Jesus and wanted all to accept him as their Lord and Savior.
She was a strong woman who worked hard to always provide for her family and strived to instill those values in everyone.
She enjoyed things such as watching Jeopardy, The Wheel, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, reading, listening to old time gospel music and preaching. She enjoyed playing Dominoes regularly with her friends and family; however, teaching all the kids how to play the game is what brought her the most joy!
We are very thankful to have had such a strong Christian woman in our lives who brought together a large blended family that has now become one.
We would like to thank the countless friends who have shown Mam-Mam such love and support during this very special time.
A service to celebrate Mam-Mam’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday April 23rd, in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington, by the Rev. Bob Stephenson. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, April 22nd, from 4 to 6 p.m. and at other times at the home of Patti and Bryon Allred, Graham Street, in Mebane.
