BURLINGTON - Margaret Louise Garrison Sutton passed away Friday, August 19, 2016, at Liberty Commons, after several years of declining health.

A native of Alamance County, she was born March 11, 1918, one of nine children to Carrie Murray and Lindsay Sidney Garrison.

She and the late Edgar Willis Sutton were married for 56 years before his death in 1993.

An infant daughter, Pamela Louise, predeceased them in 1950.

Louise was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Lee Barker, Elida Patterson and Elizabeth Coleman; and brothers, Clyde, Leon, Murray and Herbert Garrison.

Survivors include their two daughters, Merle Sharpe (Harvey) of Burlington, and Glenda Burgin (Bob) of Asheville; seven grandchildren, Todd Sharpe (Laura) of Arden, Tim Sharpe (Anita) of Raleigh, Stephanie Hetzel (Paul) of Raleigh, Lesley Dunaway of Greensboro, Cindy Sharpe (Brooke Manning) of Burlington, Carrie Burgin (Kevin Miller) of Asheville, and Andrew Burgin (Ginny) of Charlotte; seven greatgrandchildren, Emily and Henry Sharpe of Arden, Charlie and Grace Dunaway of Greensboro, and Alex, Walker, and Everett Burgin of Charlotte.

She is also survived by her brother, Bill Garrison (Mildred) of Elon, and many nieces and nephews.

Louise enjoyed a healthy and active life for most of her years and lived independently in her own home on Tarleton Avenue until 2014.

She loved gardening, cooking, her church, going to the beach with family, walking with neighbors, creating ceramic artwork for gifts to her family, watching sports (especially UNC basketball), and organizing family reunions.

The bit of mischief in her personality showed when she always played practical jokes on her siblings at their annual beach trips together. Also, each Halloween, her grandchildren anxiously awaited her disguise which never failed to surprise them!

She was considered the lasting matriarch of her large family – the one who could tell you the old stories of a wonderful childhood or keep up with everyone's whereabouts in the succeeding generations.

Louise could recall many stories about young teenagers she met while working as a cashier at Williams High School.

Many lasting friendships were made when she worked as the hostess in the commissary at Glen Raven Mills.

Participation in community and volunteer activities was very important to her.

Preparing the dishware for the Hospice flea market, directing folks at the information desk at Alamance Regional Hospital, helping with Lady Lions projects, taking roles in school, church and scout organizations when her girls were young were some of the many ways she contributed her energy and talents.

Her mind was strong; her body gave out.

This lady's great spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

The family would like to express a “thank you” to the employees of Liberty Commons for the love and patient care shown to our mother during her two years there.

Private interment will be held at Alamance Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016 at First Christian United Church of Christ, 415 S. Church Street, Burlington with Rev. Mark Pickett officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor during the hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to the Memorial Fund at First Christian United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 1678, Burlington, NC 27216.
