BURLINGTON - Mrs. Valeria ``Nickie'' Burke Matherly, 73, of 324 Thompson St., died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Clarence W. Matherly, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Claude W. ``Bunk'' Burke and Mrs. Flora Nicks Burke, both deceased. She was retired from Burlington Industries after 41 years of service. She was a member of the Burlington Senior Citizens Club.
She was a member of Beverly Hills United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three sisters, Mrs. Alice Burke Sutton, Mrs. Dora Burke Butler and Mrs. Betsy Burke Watkins, all of Burlington; five brothers, Mr. Wallace L. Burke of Roxboro, Mr. Norman ``Spider'' Burke, Mr. Robert C. Burke and Mr. Raymond L. Burke, all of Burlington, and Mr. H. Hilton Burke of Columbia, S.C.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ethel Burke Langley, and two brothers, Mr. Hugh ``Buck'' Burke and Mr. Carl W. ``Bunk'' Burke.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Beverly Hills United Church of Christ by Dr. Christopher Burr, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
