Mary Smith Surber


Mrs. Mary Smith Surber, 88, of Burlington, died Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Hospice Home in Burlington.
A native of Caswell County, Mrs. Surber was the wife of the late Ewell Edwin Surber and the daughter of the late Elijah F. Smith and the late Eva M. Smith.

Mrs. Surber retired from Western-Electric/AT&T.

She was a life-time member of First United Methodist Church of Elon, formerly West Burlington United Methodist Church.

She was known for her love of baking, especially chocolate pies and bread.

Mrs. Surber is survived by her daughter, Donna Lawson of Burlington; two sons, Mike Surber of Graham and Keith Surber of Burlington; a sister, Ruth McCann of Burlington, a brother, Howard Smith of Burlington; six grandchildren, Tina Stevens, Stephanie Watkins, Shannon Hummel, Meredith Lawson, Caleb Lawson and Tonya Baudek and 11 greatgrandchildren, Phoebe, Chloe, Trevor, Summer, Sailor, Tyler, Cole, Morgan, Maddie, Mollie and Grant.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Surber was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill Smith, Jack Smith, Fred Smith and Frank Smith.

The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. until prior to the service.

A funeral service will be held at in the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Sexton.

The family respectfully request no food gifts.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Elon, 1630 Westbrook Ave, Elon, NC 27244, or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215. They would also like to thank the staff of Hospice for their care and love of Mary.
