OBITUARIES Hovey D. Scoggins
BLOWING ROCK — Hovey D. Scoggins , 78, of 286 Elliot Circle, died Friday, July 23, 2004.
Mr. Scoggins was born on October 29, 1925 in Guilford County, N.C. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He left home at the age of 17 to build Liberty Ships at Carolina Beach. During WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the Signal Corps, and was stationed in India. After the war, he graduated from Elon College with a degree in business. Standard Oil of New Jersey employed him for 16 years. In 1969 he and his wife, Peggy, realized their dream and moved to Blowing Rock. They built and operated the Hillwinds Inn until 1990. Mr. Scoggins was active through the years in the Blowing Rock American Legion, Boy Scouts, Blowing Rock Rotary Club and the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by his parents, C. Lee and Elizabeth P. Scoggins ; two brothers, C. Robert Scoggins and Gary H. Scoggins ; and two sisters, Hazel Scoggins and Lucille Barber.
Survivors include Peggy Hoffman Scoggins , his wife of 53 years; two daughter, Shawna S. Rhyne and Myra L. Scoggins ; two grandchildren, Adam and Emily Rhyne; and one sister, Frances Tyer.
The family will receive friends Monday from Noon until 1:30 p.m., to be followed by a 2 p.m. funeral service at Grace Lutheran Church, Boone, N.C., where he was a member. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Crossnore School, 100 DAR Drive, Crossnore, N.C. 28657.
