Mrs. Effie Thomas Conally dies at 103
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Effie Thomas Conally, 103, formerly of South Mebane Street and a resident of Home Place of Burlington, died on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at the Hospice Home of Burlington.
A native of Lee County, N.C., she was the wife of the late Henry Grady Conally, and the daughter of Alton Thomas and Callie Pittman Thomas, both deceased. She was retired from Belk Department Store after 25 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington. Mrs. Conally loved to travel, and after her retirement, she made numerous trips with Christian groups. She walked to work everyday, and after she retired, she made daily walks through downtown Burlington.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Conally and wife, Faye, of Elon; a sister, Lois Powers of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Meta Conally Best of High Point; two stepgrandsons, Duane Best and wife, Gloria, and Sam Best III and wife, Ginger; four stepgreat grandchildren; two step-great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. Dr. Dale Steele and the Rev. Dr. Terry Peele will be officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence of the son, Tom, 712 Chancery St., Elon.
