The Rev. Weldon  Thomas Madren 

    CONCORD — The Rev. Weldon  Thomas Madren , 83, of 2325 Twilight Drive, passed away at Heritage of Town Center Sunday evening, Sept. 4, 2005.

    The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Gilead United Church of Christ, where Rev. Madren  will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral. The Rev. Larry Bolick, and the Rev. Mark Andes will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Thursday at Wilkinson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., and will be at the home the remaining times.

    Rev. Madren  was born to William Taylor and Lena Waynick Madren  in Alamance County, on Jan. 19, 1922. He graduated from Elon College in 1943 and Duke Divinity School in 1947. He was licensed in 1941 at Happy Home United Church of Christ. He served Pleasant Ridge United Church of Christ in Guilford County and several Christian churches in Randolph County as a student pastor. He was ordained in 1943 at Third Avenue Congregational Church in Danville, Va. During his active ministry he served Christian churches in Randolph County, N.C. and Halifax County, Va., Happy Home UCC in Ruffin, Bethlehem UCC near Winston-Salem, and New Gilead UCC in Concord. At New Gilead, Rev. Madren  served from 1976 to 1986.

He retired in 1986 and was honored as pastor emeritus of New Gilead in 1987. Since retiring he has served as interim pastor for Rodgers Park UCC in Kannapolis, Bethel UCC in Mount Pleasant, and Boger UCC in Concord on two occasions. He also served 13 years as an Associate Chaplain for Cabarrus Memorial Hospital.

    He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Ross Madren ; daughters, Nancy Westbrook of Chesapeake, Va., and Gail Hedgecock of Whiteville; sons, Tommy Madren  of Tappahannock, Va., Amos Madren  of Fairfax Station, Va., and Dale Madren  of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

    Memorials may be made to Nazareth Childrens Home, P.O. Box 1438, Rockwell, N.C. 28138.
