Former Alaska resident Herbert Lemnel Rice, 69, died March 14, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident earlier that day in Pelham, N.C. A funeral was held in North Carolina.
Mr. Rice was born Feb. 25, 1931, in Caswell County, N.C., the son of the late Loyd L. Rice and Louella Begley Rice. Mr. Rice was a veteran of the U.S. Army and resided for 20 years in Wasilla, where he was an engineer for the Alaska Railroad. He retired in 1991 and moved to Danville, N.C. While living in Alaska, he was a pilot and operated a flight school at Big Lake. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Danville and the Gold Wing Riders Association in Eden, N.C.
Mr. Rice is survived by five daughters; Gale Rice Reavis of North Carolina, Corrina Rice of Washington state, Janine Allen of Wisconsin and Erin Rice of Arizona; sons Keith and Robert, both of North Carolina, and Eric of Portland, Ore.; and sisters Mary Griggs, Ellen Shaw and Virginia Rice, all of North Carolina.
