Bertha Irene King Phillips
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Bertha Irene King Phillips, age 95, of 623 W. Davis St., Burlington, N.C., died at her residence on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.
She was born in Alamance County, February 20, 1913, to Ada Rascoe King and George Freeman King, both deceased. She was married to Louis Allen Phillips on December 29, 1930 until his death in 1958. She was a longtime member of the Elon Community Church United Church of Christ and previously a member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ. She served as the teenage girls’ housemother at the Elon Homes for Children for over 25 years and volunteered at the Elon Homes until her death assisting with mailings and assembling Campbell Soup labels for more than 30 years. She was selected as the Alamance County Mother of the Year in 1968, as an honor for her work at the Children’s Home.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia P. Bason and her husband, Bobby, of Burlington, with whom she made her home for 30 years; and a son, Willard A. Phillips Sr. and wife, Janey, of Hartsville, Tennessee. She is also survived by two grandchildren; a granddaughter, Renee P. Lewis and husband, Steven, of Huntington, Texas, and a grandson, W. Allen Phillips Jr. and wife, Arien, of Brunswick, Georgia. Also surviving are three great-granddaughters, Jessica Raynor of Huntington, Texas, USMC Lance Corporal Stacey L. Duong and her husband, Cuu, of Miramar Marine Air Base, Miramar, California, and Madison Phillips of Brunswick, Georgia. She is also survived by one sister, Evelyn K. Smith of Burlington.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar King; and sisters, Jennie Underwood, Maggie Moore, Edna Gwynn, Elma St. Clair and Dorothy King.
The funeral will be conducted at Elon Community Church United Church of Christ on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Dan Kuhn, Dr. W.W. Snyder, and Mrs. Wilma Williamson. Burial will follow the service in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m., and at other times they will be at the residence.
