BURLINGTON — Justin Lee Matkins, 19, died Dec. 14, 2001, at Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville, after being hospitalized on Dec. 1st from an accident where he was struck by a car. He sustained serious injuries and remained in a coma. A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Teri Greene Matkins of Burlington and George W. Matkins Jr. and Kim Mann of Swepsonville. He is also surived by his brother, Christopher Matkins and stepbrothers, Jacob, Joshua, Jeremy and Jonathan Mann. In Justin’s short lifetime, some of his achievements were attending UNC-Wilmington where he was double majoring in English and Political Science. He transferred there after attending both Alamance Community College and Elon University. He was a 2000 graduate of Western Alamance High School where he was the Student Body President and was voted Best All Around his senior year. He was very involved with the band program since middle school. He was a member of the student council all four years, a peer tutor, a member of Students Against Drunk Driving, a member of the marching band, FCA, the Key Club, and Future Teachers of America. He was also a member of the 200 Who’s Who Listing of national high school students. Justin exhibited at the Old Threshers Reunion in Denton for many years. Justin worked for Wright Brothers Steak House of Burlington and American Eagle Clothing in Burlington and Wilmington. He was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church. He enjoyed and worked with the Green Leaves summer program of Alamance County for disabled children. He diligently was a very popular and well-liked person with almost everyone he came in contact with. The void that he leaves in the lives of family and friends will not soon be filled. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Brookwood Baptist Church with the Rev. David Gordon, Mr. Keith Coble and his brother Christopher Matkins officiating. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory but the family will not be present. They will receive friends at the father’s home, 3175 Oakridge Drive in Swepsonville, and at the home of the mother’s sister, 1810 Gerringer Mill Road in Burlington, during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Green Leaves, c/o Beverly Melton, Burlington Parks and Recreation, 1333 Overbrook Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215 or to Justin Matkin’s Scholarship Fund, c/o Western Alamance High School, 1731 N.
