GREENSBORO — Mrs. Ruth Perkins Wicker died Saturday, September 20, 2008, at her home. She was 96.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, at Christ United Methodist Church on Holden Road. Mrs. Wicker was a long and faithful member of that church as well as numerous community organizations.
Mrs. Wicker, well known for her efforts to both preserve and enhance the Greensboro community, was born in Reidsville on August 7, 1912, the daughter of Robert and Minnie Perkins, respected citizens of that city. She was the widow of John Floy Wicker, a prominent Greensboro architect who designed many of the better known Greensboro buildings, including the original Greensboro Coliseum.
Mrs. Wicker was an active participant in a series of community projects in Greensboro that were designed to help protect the historic value and expand the culture of the city. She was a founder of the Greensboro Lecture League, a charter member of the Till and Toil Garden Club, was an active and supportive member of Rachel Caldwell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of Starmount Country Club.
She was proud of her heritage. Both she and her husband were lovers of history and collectors of antiques, some of which she donated to the Greensboro Historical Museum. After her husband's death, Mrs. Wicker, in 1995, established an endowment to support an annual cultural event at the museum known as the John Floy Wicker Speaker Series. The endowment has provided a series of interesting and informative speakers on the topics of Southern lifestyles, history and humor. The most recent Wicker Series event was the play "Lasting Impressions" earlier this year.
Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Perkins Barrow and her husband, retired Rear Admiral W. W. Barrow of Annandale, Virginia, and 19 nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express its appreciation to Mrs. Wicker's friends for their care and concern on her behalf during her period of declining health. Their kindness was a comfort and blessing in the final stages of her life.
