Mrs. Helen Bowles Smith


    BURLINGTON — Mrs. Helen Bowles Smith, 82, formerly of Pagetown Road, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at Alamance Health Care after several months of declining health.
    Born in Pender County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Lee Bowles and the late Julia Joyce Bowles and was married to the late J.C. Smith, who died in 1967. She retired from the Hub Beauty Shop, where she was a longtime hairdresser. She was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where she served as a former choir director.
    Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, T.J. Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Durham, and Kevin Smith and his wife, Sharon, of Gibsonville; and a grandson, Phillip Baldwin.
    She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister, Nellie Warren; and a brother, Leonard Bowles.
    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Renee Burnette. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the committal service and other times at the home of her son, Kevin Smith, 411 Brown Bark Lane, Gibsonville.
    The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Oaks of Burlington and also Alamance Health Care for all the loving care and attention given to Mrs. Smith during her stay.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church General Fund, 1421 Bethel Methodist Church Road, Burlington, N.C. 27217 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
