Mrs. Ruth L. Whittecar
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Ruth L. Whittecar, 92, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, May 7, 2003 at Twin Lakes Center in Burlington. Mrs. Whittecar was the wife of the late Rev. George R. Whittecar, D.D., Lutheran minister and former bishop of the North Carolina Lutheran Synod, ELCA, headquartered in Salisbury, N.C. She moved to Burlington in 2001.
Born Ruth Elizabeth Edvinna Livers on Dec. 9, 1910, in Denver, Colo., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Ralph W. Livers and Nellie Young Livers. Mrs. Whittecar held a lifelong interest in education. As a former high school teacher of English and Latin, she had a deep appreciation for adult literacy and became a certified Laubach tutor. She served 15 years on the Literacy Council of North Carolina and was a life member of the Rowan County Literacy Council. Growing up in Nebraska, she took pride in her grandparents and other pioneer ancestors who settled the eastern part of that state in the mid-1800s. She was active in the leadership of numerous civic, social and church organizations, including Lutheran Church Women, Church Women United, Southern Lutheran Seminary Auxiliary, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a docent with Historic Salisbury, and a member of Tar Heel Storytellers.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ruth W. Matkins of Burlington, Ms. Margaret W. Garrison of Indianapolis, Inc., and Mrs. Elizabeth W. Hull, Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son, Dr. G. Richard Whittecar of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and one sister. The funeral will be Monday, May 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury.
Internment will follow at 4 p.m. at the cemetery of St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Concord, N.C. The family will receive visitors Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home, 1315 W.
