Charlie Melvin Berry
MEBANE — Charlie Melvin Berry, 86, of 1655 Mebane Oaks Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.
Mr. Berry was born in Orange County, N.C. He retired from Melville Furniture. He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, where he served as a guard at the Nuremberg Trials. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Mebane.
Mr. Berry loved to dance and fish. He was a very special paw-paw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the family’s “Mr. Gadget,” and loved tinkering with anything mechanical around the house.
Survivors include daughters, Sonja Hylton (Doug) of Pleasant Garden and Sue Florence of New Bern and late husband Mike;grandchildren, Michelle Hylton, Angie Parker, MeghanWoolard, Ben M. Florence, Emily R. Florence; greatgrandchildren,LillianSpeight, Codie Grey Speight, Colton C. Speight, Sophia Houck, Gabriella Houck, Finley Parker; brothers,
Jesse Berry of Efland, Delmar Berry of Durham and Richard Berry of Efland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lilly Rechberger Berry; parents, Charlie William Berry and Neva Shanklin Berry; sisters, Lucille Hicks, Dot Huntley, Louise Riddle.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Mebane by the Rev. Ray Teague and the Rev. James Florence Sr.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. At other times, they will be at the residence.
McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is assisting the Berry family.
