Mrs. Thelma A. Hayes
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Thelma A. Hayes, 94, died Saturday, January 16, 2010, in Greenville.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Rich and Thompson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Hayes relocated to Greenville in 1998 from Burlington, where she had lived her entire life. Her parents were Cicero and Daisy Andrews, both natives and lifelong residents of Burlington. Thelma was the last survivor of their 14 children. Her brothers and sisters were Cecil Harris Andrews, Rosa Bell Andrews, Tommy Andrews, Bruce Andrews, Lottie Ruth Andrews, Frank Andrews, Robert Morris Andrews, Paul Walter Andrews, Hazel Andrews, Nancy Margaret Andrews, Evelyn Marie Andrews, Marvin Lynn Andrews and Lila Doris Andrews.
Mrs. Hayes, for 20 years, worked as manager of the cafeteria at various schools in Burlington. She was married for 49 years to the late S. Homer Hayes; he died in 1985. She was a charter member of First Evangelical and Reformed Church and later was a charter member of the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. In Greenville, she was an active member of The Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are daughter, Judy Hayes Bernhardt and husband, Robert, of Greenville; grandson, William H. Brande and Jenny Batchler of Grimesland; and step-granddaughter, Lydian Bernhardt Averitt and husband, Phillip, of Greensboro and their children, Caroline and Peyton; and brothers-in-law, Winfred (Beadie) Sumner and Lloyd Cozart.
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews including Sue Walton and husband, Steve; Cathy Tarlton and husband, Tim; Connie Yarbrough and husband, W. D.; Rickie Hall and wife, Cyndy; Wayne Mooneyham; Darryl Andrews and wife, Mae; and Randall Andrews and wife, Julia.
A special thanks to her friend and caregiver Brenda Carraway and also to Marie McCormick. Thank you to University Health Care Systems Inpatient Hospice for the comfort and care she received. Thank you also to her entire church family at The Memorial Baptist Church and particularly the Homebound Ministry.
An earlier service and visitation was held on Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville.
