Winfred Lee “Beadie” Sumner
BURLINGTON — Winfred Lee “Beadie” Sumner went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, May 26, 2014, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after suffering a brain hemorrhage at 94 years of age. His loving family was at his side.
Mr. Sumner was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Andrews Sumner; and two brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his children, Connie Sumner Yarbrough (W.D.) and Cathy Sumner Tarlton (Tim); grandchildren, Jennifer Tarlton Adams (Jonathan), Natalie Yarbrough Wright (Ben), Jonathan Blake Tarlton (Abby); several nieces and nephews and among them he was very close to Tim Sumner, Gwen Hilton, Darrell Andrews, Judy Bernhardt, Sue Walton, Ricky Hall and Randall Andrews; and dear friends, Todd McGuire and Mike Smith.
Mr. Sumner was born Aug. 28, 1919, to Hurley Lee and Robena Faulkner Sumner. His childhood days were spent on a small farm in the Hopedale Community. He was the second of four children. At age five, tragedy struck the family when his father died from a sudden illness. He attended Pleasant Grove School, but had to leave school after the fourth grade to help support his family doing odd jobs for neighbors in his community. With constant hard work, the family managed to survive and grow up during the Great Depression. Beadie began working in a mill at age 15, while still helping to manage the family farm.
Beadie married his sweetheart, Nancy Andrews, at age
21. One year after they married, he enlisted to serve his country. He was sent to join the combat engineers which reported to the Fourth Army Headquarters. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater throughout his entire threeyear service. After being honorably discharged from the service, he came home to look for a job. Borrowing $400 to buy a dump truck, he began a sand hauling business. Eventually he opened a service station, which sold automotive accessories. This was the start of the business that later came to be known as Sumner Automotive, a thriving business that served Alamance and surrounding counties as a staple in the community. Mr. Sumner retired from the auto parts business after 52 years, and his daughter and son-in-law ran it until 2009, when it was purchased by Auto Supply Company. Sumner Automotive still operates successfully today in Burlington, now part of the Auto Supply Company family.
After the untimely death of his beloved wife, Nancy, Beadie found companionship with a rescued dog named Lucy. He began volunteering for causes most important
to him. He spent many years serving the Hospice Home of Burlington, as well as greeting families and guests at the information desk at Alamance Regional Medical Center. His greatest joy in life was found in sharing his Christian faith with others. He was a charter member and Elder Emeritus of the First ARP Church in Burlington. More recently he enjoyed attending Hillside Presbyterian Church. Whenever his family was taking him to church, as they came over the hill, he would comment that the church was like “The Little Brown Church in the Vale.”
His greatest joy in life was found in sharing his Christian faith with others. Being a member of the Gideons, he also volunteered and supported evangelism in his local community and across the world. He loved nothing more than to lead people into a relationship with Jesus, something he did often with patients in the hospital. At home, Beadie enjoyed growing food in his garden and had quite a green thumb. His main reason for growing this food was not for his own table, but for the tables of families in need. Living in his own home until his passing, Beadie enjoyed keeping up with the stock market and watching NASCAR races with his nephew, Tim. Beadie finally made his vocal debut at his 90th birthday party fulfilling a promise to a fellow church member that he would sing in front of everyone if he made it to age 90.
The funeral service will be held at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington at 2 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, with visitation being open from noon until 1:45 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hillside Presbyterian Church, 3743 Maple Avenue, Burlington, N.C.
