Frances Allene Bell Robertson
September 21, 1924 ~ July 25, 2024 (age 99)
Frances Allene Bell Robertson, 99, passed away at Ashton Health and Rehabilitation on Thursday, July 25, 2024. Allene was just two months away from celebrating her 100th birthday.
A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Walter Edward Bell and Mamie Harder Bell, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Raymond Bell, Vivian Gunter, Edna Bell, and Joe Bell.
Survivors include Allene’s children: Jo Lene Carter (Bill), Franci R. Lucas (Frank), Robin D. Robertson (Sandra Gulbreth) and Renn F. Robertson (Nikki). She also has one granddaughter Jo Carter (James Dees), and numerous nieces and nephews.
During her teenage years, Allene worked in her father’s shoe and department store, Bell’s, in Burlington’s East End. After graduating from Burlington High School, Allene attended High Point College for two years, focusing on office administration. She left college to return home to care for her father.
Allene married Joe F. Robertson, her childhood sweetheart when Joe returned from serving in the Army in World War II. Allene and Joe bought a farm and raised tobacco and a family. When Joe became part owner of a tobacco warehouse, Allene worked in the billing office.
Allene will be remembered as a true lover of animals, especially cats and dogs. Having been raised with horses, goats, geese, cows and ducks, Allene was accustomed to the care of animals. She took in many cats and dogs that the owners could not keep any longer or who had been found as strays. She never had to go searching for pets to care for; they came to her. In her later years, she adopted a dog from a nephew (Lulu), and raised a stray dog, helping him recover from the mange (Chow). Her last four legged companion, Hootza, a black lab, was adopted on the spot when her neighbor was moving and could not take him along. The kittens and cats that Allene cared for over her lifetime are too numerous to mention!
A private graveside service will be conducted at St. Mark’s Community Church on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Pastor Bryan Siefert with AuthoraCare Hospice will officiate, with Robin Robertson singing Allene’s favorite hymn, “How Great Thou Art”. Allene will be truly missed.
Memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Hospice, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
