William L. "Bill"” Brooks
William L. "Bill"” Brooks, 91, of Graham died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 5:30 a.m. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mary Ruth Davis Brooks and Betty Jeffreys Brooks, who survives and the son of James Lee Brooks and Beaulah Christopher Brooks, both deceased. He was a Sergeant in the U. S. Army Air Corps serving in the European Theatre. He was a retired manager for 37 years with Belk-Beck. Following retirement, he worked at various convenience stores. Bill was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, a former church treasurer and former Sunday school superintendent. He was past president of the Graham Exchange Club, past president of the Graham Merchant’s Association, the Burlington Moose Lodge, Foot and Fiddle Club and the Alamance Senior Golf Association. He was known as “Mr. Bill” and was loved by all the children that visited Mr. B’s Nursery with the petting zoo and gardens. In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a daughter, Angela B. Chilton (Ron) of Burlington; son, W. Lee Brooks, Jr. (Pat) of Cromberg, CA; step-sons, Victor Jeffreys (Minerva) of Burlington, David Jeffreys (Diana) and Blaine Jeffreys, all of Raleigh and Rev. Scott Jeffreys (Malia) of Statesville; four grandchildren, Mark Chilton (Kendra), Shelley Fuchs (Carsten), James Brooks (Addison) and Matthew Brooks; three great-grandchildren, Nolan Chilton, Grey Fuchs and Silas Fuchs; thirteen step-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Sue S. Brooks and Carole O. Davis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. The funeral service will be conducted at Graham Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Steve Braswell, with the family receiving friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in the church parlor. Military graveside rites will follow in Stoney Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Other times the family will be at the residence of the daughter, Angela B. Chilton, 2036 Westover Terrace, Burlington, NC. Memorials may be made to Graham Presbyterian Church, P.O.
