David Alan Denny
David Alan Denny, 60, a resident of High Point, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2016. David was born Aug. 14, 1955 in Burlington, the son of Earl Vernon Denny and Jeanne Cheek Denny.
David was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and as a young boy, was a member of the Burlington Boys’ Choir. He also had a life-long “love affair” with drums and loved playing them since junior high school. He played them in the band at Cummings High School until his graduation in 1973.
Following in his dad’s and his grandfather’s footsteps, he enjoyed “tinkering” on cars under the backyard shade tree during his teen years and could fix (and clean!) any make or model of car. He was most proud of his first automobile purchase: his black Chevrolet Impala.
David joined the Greensboro Police Department in 1974 and excelled in every area of the department he was assigned to. As a member of the Police Department, David belonged to the Special Response Team as a Marksman and was also a Range Master. Through the years, David has taught many recruits the basics in firearms training, which he loved. In August of 2002, David was presented with the Police Department’s Career Achievement Award For Dedication to Police Training.
David completed his 30 years of service to the Greensboro Police Department and retired in April of 2003. After finishing Greensboro’s Basic Police Academy in 2004, his son, Brad, received David’s badge to carry on the Denny “tradition” and it was pinned on during his graduation ceremony.
David was known for his warm personality, his giving spirit and his eagerness to help anyone, whether they were family members or casual acquaintances. One of his “trademarks” was his famous homemade oatmeal cookies that everybody (especially his children) always requested whenever there was an event and he asked “what can I bring?”
David loved his family, his wife Tammy, and their frequent excursions to the Biltmore in Asheville, the mountains, and the beach; his children, Lesli, Brad, Leigh-Ann, Brittany and Danielle; and was an amazing grandfather to Will, Calli, Mack and Gabby. He will be sorely missed by all those who loved and knew him.
David was preceded in death by his father, Earl Vernon Denny; a grandson, Will Arrington; maternal grandparents, John William and Ida Webster Cheek; and paternal grandparents, George Clyde and Elizabeth Moore Denny.
Surviving are his wife, Tammy D. Denny, of the home; daughters, Lesli Denny Arrington and husband Bob of Liberty and Leigh-Ann Jordan Denny of Greensboro; son, Bradley Ryan Denny of High Point; stepdaughters, Danielle Botello-Joffe and husband Saul of Florida and Brittany Tignor and husband Zach of Kernersville; his parents, Jeanne Denny Bray and husband Tommy of Burlington; grandchildren, Calli McKenna Arrington, McKenzie Jordan Davis and Gabrielle Botello-Joffe; sisters, Vicky D.
