Stephen Burke Rice
    SUMTER, S.C. — Stephen “Burke” Rice, 21, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 from an electrical accident at home in his garage shop.
    Born in Spartanburg, Burke was the son of Angela Burke Durrett and Stephen Mark Rice.
    Burke was a graduate of Blythewood High School, attending Central Carolina Technical College, planning to graduate in May 2010 with an Associates Degree in Auto Repair and Criminal Justice. Burke was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
    Burke loved his family and friends, as well as working on cars, trucks, motorcycles; taking things apart and building them again. Burke was looking forward to becoming a police officer and was working happily and eagerly toward that end. Burke was a big man, big feet, big hands, ever ready to help, a big heart full of love for life, his family and his poodle, Holly.
    Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Dr. Mark Durrett of Sumter; his father of Spartanburg; two step-brothers, Sam Durrett and Ned Durrett both of Columbia; his maternal grandparents, Raymond and Earlene Burke of Sumter; his maternal grandmother, Inez Rudd of Sumter; his paternal grandmother, Rachel Rice of Spartanburg; his step-paternal grandmother, Wilma Durrett of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Josie Holler and Dr. Brad Smith officiating.
    The family will receive friends following the services in the Fellowship Hall and at other times at the home of his mother and stepfather, 405Veranda Drive.
    Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Moore, S.C. with Dr. George Wilkes officiating.
    Honorary pallbearers will be members of the City of Sumter Police Department.
    Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter S.C. 29150.
