Hoyt R. Moore, 88, of 201 Pemberton Street,Yanceyville, N.C., died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville, N.C. after a brief illness. He was a native of Caswell County and the husband for 67 years to Doris H. Moore. He was devoted to the citizens of Caswell County throughout his life.
Born on May 5, 1923, he was the son of Woods Henry Moore and Eliza Rudd Moore and was a 1942 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School. He served as a Fireman First Class with the United States Coast Guard duringWorldWar II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Gen. W.P. Richardson.
Hoyt worked with Caswell Hardware and Implement Company for 20 years as a service manager and a certified GM mechanic. Upon completion of studies at North Carolina State University, he taught vocational automotive trades at Bartlett Yancey Senior High School for 18 years, retiring in 1986.
Hoyt was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7316 as well as a member of American Legion Post #89, where he maintained a Legion membership for 66 years. He served in various positions with the American Legion, including Post Commander, Service Officer, District Commander, District Vice-Commander, Adjutant and Finance Officer. Hoyt served for 15 years as North Carolina Department Historian for the American Legion, as well as eight years with the North Carolina Division of Veteran Affairs. He received a plaque at the North Carolina American Legion Convention last year honoring his years of service to Post #89.
Hoyt formed the American Legion baseball team in Caswell County, and served 24 years as manager and fundraiser for the team. He was inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 1968, cited for his many years of volunteer effort in building and maintaining one of the best Legion baseball teams in the state. He has been and still is known throughout the state as “Mr. Legion Baseball.”
Hoyt assisted in the formation of the Caswell County Agricultural Fair, which ran for 49 years. He served as first president and was manager of the Fair Association in Caswell County for 40 years. In 1986, Hoyt served as President of the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs. He established an annual auction for the association to sponsor college scholarships, and in 1995 he received the Hardee’s American Heritage Award (a national award given by the International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions) for his many years of volunteer service with the Caswell County Agricultural Fair.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Wayne R. Moore of Semora, N.C.; one brother, Graham W. Moore of Columbia, Md.; grandchildren Amanda M. White, Brent R. Moore, Rachel M. Williams, and Jeremy M. Williams; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Madison Moore.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Diane M. Williams of Yanceyville, N.C.; as well as five brothers and two sisters.
The memorial service will be conducted on Friday, April 13, at 2 p.m. in the Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville by Pastor Wayne Jones. The family will receive friends Friday, following the memorial service at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
