Obituary Online notes for Doris Marie SMITH
Doris Smith Whitlow, 87, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had been a resident, formerly of Abingdon Place and 426 Northmont Blvd., Danville.

Born on March 16, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the youngest daughter of Thomas Brooks Smith and Lottie Terrell Smith.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed in Dept. Three Dress at Dan River Mills until her retirement in 1979. She was a longstanding member of the VFW, past president of the 647th Auxiliary and president of the Fifth District Auxiliary. She enjoyed oil painting and crafts. She was an outdoor enthusiast who loved fishing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Martin Whitlow. A mother of two, she also was predeceased by both sons, David Felix Burch, who died in Vietnam and Joseph Earl Burch Jr.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Wesley, Steve, Wilbur, and Charlie Smith. She also was predeceased by two sisters, Edna Smith McKinney and Bertie Smith Gunn.

Survivors are five grandchildren, Tina Marsh and husband, Lee, of Liberty, N.C., Cissy Caviness and husband, David, of Climax, N.C., Laurie Gray of Raleigh, N.C., Deanna Willard and husband, Wayne, of Brown Summit, N.C., and Bobby Joe Burch and wife, Kathy, of Pinetops, N.C. She is survived by 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Ruby M. Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at the Leasburg United Methodist Church Cemetery, in Leasburg, N.C.; by the Rev. Thomas H. Smith, nephew of the deceased, will officiate.......
